Celebrating 65 years / Shavuot Games
President Deborah Rood Goldman and former President Dr. Jeffrey Krupen greeted Garden City Mayor Brian Daughney at the 65th Anniversary Party.
More than fifty people attended the Tree planting ceremony in front of the Social Hall.
The Rabbi gave a short sermon about trees and Cantor led the group in song.
Rabbi Goodman and student Cantor Amelia Lavranchuk in a terrific photo.
Garden City Mayor Brian Daughney spoke to the crowd.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillian spoke eloquently about the formative years of the GCJC.
Former GCJC Presidents and/or their representatives lit candles and gave a few reasons why the Temple has been important to them.
Dr. Jeffrey Krupen, Dr. Alan Schoenfeld, Ken Gittelson, Rabbi Stephen Wise Goodman, Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillian, Norma Mindel, representatives of David Greenwald and Jay Minsky, Deborah Rood Goldman, Mark Temares, Carolyn Hoera, Margie Edelman, Howard Edelman, and more representatives of Murray Rood. The Garden City Jewish Center thanked all former presidents for their years of service.
Dr. Schoenfeld showed a slide show about the first 60 years of the temple’s history. Carolyn Hoera showed a slide show about our current year, to bring the two time periods together. The 65th Anniversary Dinner was a wonderful evening featuring food provided by Howard White and Janna Pinsky. Thank you to President Rood Goldman for being in charge of the festivities.
During the final session of Religious School, the Blue Team gave their ideas to the Captain...
...while the White team tried to steal a point. Rabbi Goodman and Cantor Lavranchuk quizzed the teams on Jewish history (especially pertaining to Shavuot), Hebrew (thanks to Mrs.Krupen), and music from Shabbat and holiday services.
Mr. Shapiro was our poster contest judge. He picked winners that were clever, neat (!), and expressed good sportsmanship.
The White team winning poster was an Acrostic that also was free style poetry. Nice.
Peter Tittler prepared pizza, and set out snacks, water, cookies and ice cream for the students! Thank you to Margie Edelman as well.
The outdoor part of the game day featured some frankly incredible sunshine!
The traditional spoon and potato race was fun!
The potato sack race was great.
Don’t fall out of the sack before the finish line!
There were signs of good sportsmanship all around.
Our traditional egg toss began....
...and each pair stepped further and further away.
Alright, you’ll eventually have to throw the egg, guys.
Everyone had lots of fun.
Thank you for a wonderful year, everyone.
Thanks especially to all the teachers, parents and volunteers.
Have a healthy, happy, safe, wonderful summer!
Let’s be careful out there, folks. Hope to see some of you at Summer services.
